This hard stone gouge was found yesterday. It was a surface find on a river bank in Maine. It is six inches long and is an inch and five -eighths wide at the bit end tapering down to an inch and a quarter. The bit end is highly polished and very sharp.I have been handling it and have it looking very dark.It is one of my best gouges.Definetly the sharpest and most polished...mjm

Killer! Banner find IMO......

very cool nice find

Now that is a special piece! What great polish on it. Congrats

Very Nice!

Excellent use wear showing on that beauty.

Outstanding find!

Holy cow look at the bit on that tool. Simply amazing wood working tool. Congratulations and thanks for the view. Great pics!

One of the rarest Stone Tools to find and in near perfect condition. This not making the Banner would be a crime.

I vote Banner as well, super nice find!

That is an awesome gouge! :notworthy:

(Banner Worthy!)

Really awesome gouge !!, Just curious if you have collected other artifacts from that site that you can use to help date the gouge? HH

Thanks for all the nice comments...The area I was hunting was a long stretch of riverbank not really one specific site but a lot of them I'm guessing.I can say its probably middle archaic...Maine maritime tradition...

What a find, congrats.
