Went out yesterday to sift at my site and came up with more pottery shards to put back together to see what the original bottle or item looked like. Found this what I thought was just a piece of tin turned out to be something from the State of Maine and has their seal on it. Original reaction was CW related but not sure. I would think something for a soldier would have been made of sturdier material. It is tin and very flimsy so need to handle it carefully so it does not bend.
Any thoughts on what I could have here?

Thanks

I wonder if it could be a state of Maine parade hat badge? The size would be 5"H x4"W. HH

not sure. Was thinking hat badge. The size is only about 2" high by 2" wide as you can see in the pic.

I'm thinking hat device is correct, and I lean towards 1820's Maine Militia

War of 1812 shako plate, that's my guess!

war of 1812 would be fantastic.... but did they make stuff out of thin material like that? It is tin I believe even though its not magnetic. Can be easily bent. Will research War of 1812 items now to verify. Anyone else find stuff so flimsy?

Looking at shako hat plates it does look like that may be it. The flimsiness of it confuses me still but I guess they were made with lighter material. I also see that the State Seal of Maine design was adopted in 1820 so the item would have to be after that and there seem to be many different versions of the seal out there (the two people standing varies).
How did the plate attach to the hat? I do not see any attachment parts on the back.

Thanks again for your input my friends
