i was curious if anyone here has ever hunted this area. I have lived in Reading my whole life and have always heard about several indian camps along Willow Creek. So when i was younger i used to walk the creek and look for artifacts but never really found anything. I know there have been tons of artifacts unearthed around that area, as it has become quite developed in the past few years. I went there today to have a walk up the creek again and found a few things, though im sure nothing of note. I am interested to know if anyone has any information. Oddly enough, when i was on my way there, i saw two guys using a sifting screen on the other side of the highway by the coke plant. Im not sure what they were doing and i thought id stop and ask when i was done with my hunt but they were gone by then. ill have to post the few objects i did find there when i have pics of them. i found two small pieces of pottery in one of the sand bars, they are both intact and are very similar in size but i think they are relatively modern. i also found a tooth, which i believe is either a horse or more likely a cow, a neat piece of quartz near one of the underpasses that was no doubt unearthed during construction, and a possible, and i mean POSSIBLE piece of chert.

Josh

EDIT- Here are some photos. the first is the two pieces of pottery....

the tooth.....

the quartz.......

and i didnt really take any photos of the chert as it is pretty insignificant, but it does show slight signs of work from chipping but i dont think i can convey it well in a photo. i can take other photos if anyone is interested. if course if anyone has any ideas on these, please feel free to comment.

I have only hunted private areas to date though I am close to the area. It never hurts to look, when I was panning in a stream down south i found an Indian head penny, so you never know. Not sure if you would want any help but I'm close enough for a weekend trip.

sure, we will have to make a plan once it cools down a bit. id be interested in hunting areas near you as well. where do you live?

I never realized there were access to Willow Creek. It always looked like it was over grown or closer to UGI it's private property. Were you closer to Berkley near 61? That's a very historic area. If you guys ever plan a hunt in that area, pm me. I'd like to join.

i was hunting alone but the creek meanders through a few miles of undeveloped and developed property, but its hidden from the rest of the world so its pretty private. i would assume that at one point you might get onto someones property but honestly, i only walk inside the creek the entire way and i dont think anyone can claim to own that. the section that i was at started behind the gorgio plant and i walked north-ish along the creek until i was behind the newish housing developement. at one point i crossed under 73, which is where i found that hunk of quartz. i have been looking over google maps and i think i see some bends in the stream that might be more plausible to finds. email me directly and ill be happy to take you along the next time i head out.

I find tons and tons of indian artifacts in corn fields that are plowed. Most corn or other crops that have a cleared spot were usually an indian camp. Hope this helps

What???

Field walking in berks and lehigh counties is pretty easy, the amish/mennonite people are ok, just ask them first. For field walking that is. Lots of places to look, I usually stayed north of kutztown when I used to field walk.

thanks guys, anyone have any ideas on some of the stuff that i posted above?
