Magnets and MDs

Paperclips? You detecting in an office building?

Discriminate out iron on the detector's settings. Magnets may overload a detector if they are close, as will any large iron. Most modern detectors will ignore the mild magnetic field of a paperclip. They don't work on or off magnetism. It's changes in conductivity that trigger a hit. On a threshhold machine iron (magnetic) will cause a dip in tone while non-ferrous metals cause a rise in tone.

Now if you're talking putting a magnet on a coil to grab the clips . . . forget it.

Hey Charlie??? Is that what my DFX is telling me when it says overload? I've got that a couple times in trashy area, pretty close to fire pits. Something magnetic maybe or just too much info for the detector?

I would say yes. Like when you get too close to a fence or the monkey bars. If you don't see anything that might cause it lift the detector. sometimes it's something big just below the surface (like a flattened soda can).

Maybe a Strong Magnet.

Dosn't the Speaker inside the Control box have a Magnet ?

I use a magnet all the time when i hunt i use the ..rare earth N-42..magnet if i dig and pin point and can not find the target ............And it drives me crazy i put the magnet in the hole and ..........9 times out of 10 it will bring out a piece of junk.............................==Jim

I have a strong magnet glued inside my water scoop to catch the stray fish hooks, bobby pins and trash that set off the LS
