Two of the silver finds from last week are slightly magnetic. Enough that I can pick them up with a rare earth magnet. One is a ring and the other is an ear ring. Both tested good for silver. Is it picking up the .75 metal in the content or is it "loaded" with a base metal core? Thoughts anyone.

sounds like a metelergy question.....sry no help........HH

I have had that happen with Earrings, and it turned out to be Stainless Steel Post..not sure about the ring

The metals that are magnetic are Iron, Nickel, and Cobalt.

It would pretty rare for silver to be alloyed with any of these. Most often copper is alloyed, and in industrial applications a few other metals. So not to start any arguements, but regardless of any markings you likely have a nickel alloy of some sort.

PS good quality Stainless Steel is not magnetic either. Poor quality stuff passing as SS is quite magnetic, and will rust.

In chains the clasp is magnetic sometimes due to the spring mechanism. Never seen a ring...

Stainless steel's (SS) magnetic property is inversely proportional to its chromium content. The higher the chromium content, the less magnetic the SS becomes and the better the quality of the SS. Copper is another non-magnetic metal that will negate nickel's natural magnetism; this is why pocket change is not magnetic.

You should not be able to pick up silver with a magnet.... The magnet is picking up up on something magnetic so, check the post like someone said and look to see if anything is on the ring that would make it attract to a magnet. My guess is you have filled silver jewelry, Heavy silver plate over something magnetic. The reason it tested good is because the plate is very thick. Try filing a small deep scratch in it and test it again. Best of luck !!
Keep @ it and HH !!

I'm thinking that it would have to be some kind of base metal..............right?
