I've been studying this a bit in the two weeks since I found it in my lower yard. I've questioned that maybe it is a door knocker, but I'm certain it is not.

Next time my brother comes up I'll post better pictures - his hands don't shake.

My ancestors had mules and oxen, and had the stables up on the ridge to the West of me. So, it's so heavy duty, it might be that - but I'm really stretching my imagination with that.

That which might be the knocker is well off center

Note that this view shows one side of knocker "scooped"

Looks more like a brass drawer pull to me.

Broken reign guide from a wagon?

Now that's a thought! I think I'll pull out my Celestron and get better detailed pictures. Pain in the derriere to set it up :( Need a better one!

Here's better pictures of the "tab".

Looks like it was made to be soldered on. Might of been on the side of a copper or brass pot.

You may very well be correct.

My imagination was at work, thought it might be related to a harness, with the ring catching two straps, and the tab into a strap hole for connection off the bottom or top.

This may be the case, but I'm studying harnesses now...

Muddyhanz nailed it, and I found the exact same rein guide on a 1775 homestead last year. Cool find.

Oh man you're kidding!!!

You're kidding....

My ancestors settled this place sometime after 1730 - we don't know for sure as the courthouse burned in 1834. Good Lord I never expected!

Thank you! Did you post your find on here?

Nope I did'nt post it here, but I will tonight. I did found it behind the oldest cemetery on my county (it's on my land). Oldest tombstone date 1814. It will be a pain in the derriere to find the photos, but I will.

Funny we found the same thing, thousands miles apart. Can't wait to post tonight and i remember I had found something else on that day and it was one of my best relic. Will post the 2 photos when I get home. Sorry to be such a tease ;)

Here it is, with the other find I made that same weekend. Looks pretty much the same, but I see a slight difference at the point of connection. Yours seems to finish into a round point, mine looks flat. Still cool.
The other find looks like some sort of antique door bell mechanism activated by foot :dontknow:? Was found in a field, in front of the old cemetary.
Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for digging up those pictures! I really like that door bell mechanism, congratulations on that one!

Mine is a wee bit more crudely made, but they're siblings!

We've what, the two known ones :)

I agree with vhs07. It was soldered or brazed onto a larger object, which was curved... such as the edge of a pot, as vhs07 suggests. It is a "lifting ring."

That lower piece is so cool looking! Have you checked into what it really might be? I'd love to know.

It's some kind of doorbell. I think it was on the porch floor, just beside the main door and was connected to a bell inside. It's the most ornated piece I have ever found and I remember it was badly bent when I dug it, but it was surprisingly malleable and I could straighten it a bit. More I look at it, the more I like it.

After the term "rein guide", I went looking for rein guides, and all the ones I found were bolted.

I'm not settled on "pot handle" yet either but it may very well be that.

The ring is encrusted, but some areas are brass in color. I need to do electrolysis on the darned thing. Where the "tab" is attached to the ring, it's off center, and as the pictures show = a lump.

Looking at this again, I'm sold on the Pot Handle.
