I was cashing in my recycle receipt at a service counter and asked for change instead of bills...explaining that I was looking for older coins....the clerk got very excited and mentioned he had a reject bin full of coins the bank would not take...he brought it out and showed it to me...and said I could have it since they were throwing it out...I began filling my coat pocket with the rejected coins...then another clerk came over and said he can't just give the rejected coins away without permission from the manager who was on vacation......my heart sank...as we talked other customers came by and began asking if they could have the coins...it was kind of surreal...I gave back the coins from my pocket...and let the clerk know I didn't want to get him into any trouble but to please not throw any of the coins away until I was able to speak with the manager....long story short, I met with the manager tonight who gave the thumbs up... I did pay for the wheat backs penny for penny...I had to sort quickly as the clerk was on the clock...I thanked the manager and he let me know I could come back again.... honestly I wasn't expecting him to say yes...needless to say I was thrilled and I need to reward the clerk somehow....

I ended up with a couple 1916 wheats...a 1918, 1927,28, 30-39...the 1940,41 were the winners for the most...and to top it off I realized I had garnered. 59 Roosevelt dime from a previous coinstar pull that I missed...I keep my pulls in an empty mixed nut container and was sorting through that...
All in all a great day for me.

So if I understand correctly they were going to "throw out" wheat penny's? Makes no sense to me. They are more valuable than those biodegradable zinken penny's. Anyways I'm glad you came home with some finds. Keep it up csm!

Apparently they throw the coins away...I was surprised since I saw perfectly good coins in the mix...and I assume wheat backs are still spendable...

Nice score for you. I always thought the bank would exchange the coins for good ones.
If you have the serial numbers from paper they wiil give you a new bill. At least this is what I hgave been told, I could be wrong

Cool...I do have half a $1 bill... I'm curious to try that out.

Thanks Billb!
