I have a M6 and an old 6000di. The question is about depth. I have the standard coil that comes with the M6. My old 6000di (circa 1985) has a 12 inch hot head coil that I can use. The question is which would you use to find deep targets? The hot head is suppose to go deeper but I have my doubts because of its age and possible loss of sensitivity. Am I right to think if I do a beach with a larger coil I will find the deeper targets the "swingers" miss. When I do the beach I do it slow and thorough like a man cutting his lawn. HH, OldSean

I'd take the M6 over the 6000Di. The M6 is more sensitive to the lower conductors like gold due to the higher frequency (15kHz) and the Hot Head coil is vastly inferior to the M6's Eclipse 950 coil. Jimmy Sierra used to sell a Hot Shot 12" coil that was pretty good, but the Hot Head coil was one of KellyCo's first aftermarket coils. They false a lot and the more you crank the sensitivity the worse they get. I've never seen a Hot Head coil work as well as a 950 coil. They will air test OK but as soon as you get them over soil you have to back the sens way down to keep them stable, losing any depth advantage they should of had over a 950 coil.

That sound like words of wisdom. Do you think investing in a bigger coil for my M6 would help or will I still lose sensitivity with the larger size? Thanks for the help. OldSean

is your 6000 di pro the black box if it is it is a deeper detector with 950 blue max deep scan, but won't handle hot rocks as well as the M6 and the M6 would find targets before you even got the 6000 ground balance which is still faster than 5900 di pro to balance, M6 has the tone I.D. but swing speed should be the same, insanely fast or slow enough all most non motion too zero in right on top of things.

The Super 12 (or 300mm) is a very good coil for searching large areas and it will get a little more depth than the 950. It's plenty sensitive enough to get coins and rings. There are also Excellerator coils sold by a large internet and mail order detector dealer. Some folks really like them but I've always been happy with coils supplied by White's.

Thanks for the info. One more question. Does the 8X14 inch DD coil have any atvantage to over the Super 12? Is depth a function of coil surface area or is there some more complex physics behind it? HH, OldSean

All things being equal the larger the coil the deeper it will detect a larger target. Things like shape (round vrs. oval), Design (DD vrs. Concentric), and quality (componets & craftsmanship) all effect the performance. To your question I'd say the DD has an advantage in trashier sites but the Super 12 would be deeper. Nobody buys a larger coil for trashy sites, they buy larger coils for more depth. Usually a DD coil will detect approximately as deep as a concentric coil of the same diameter as the smallest dimention of the DD. In other words a 8"x14" DD coil will detect about the same depth as an 8" concentric. You can see that the Super 12 would be a couple of inches deeper than the 8x14.

thank you for all your help. I think I will get the 12" coil for my beach combing of my large but over detected beach. Maybe I will get some deeper targets missed by the "swingers" Oldsean
