Made it back to my new lunch site in the park woods. Spent most of my hour yesterday and today still trying to find the dot on the historical map (dozens of old shotgun ends), but made it to the Carriage House site for about 20 minutes each day. Basically reswinging the same small area.

Another harmonica reed, first metal comb, first iron button, really cool brooch(yes, I checked the hole for the stone, no luck) and a COIN!!! To me it looks like a holed 1867 V Nickel. Only second coin at this site, other was IHP. The hole was filled with a white cement like substance, like someone tried to repair it. I chipped it out as I like the holed look better.
Here is the deep hole with the brooch, thought it was some kind of ornate plate at first.ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1502213434.525986.jpg
Here is how the Nickel came out of the ground.ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1502213472.092799.jpg

I did the salt and vinegar process and I'm very happy with the results and now can see date, looks like a Nickel now.ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1502213533.805052.jpg

Thx Javadroid! I tend to find very few nickels in the old dirt vs a logical proportion in the sand. I've only found 1 Buffalo, 2 War Nickels this year, no V's ever. The Shield bounced between penny and nickel signals and was not deep, maybe 3".

You dog you! I WANT MY FIRST SHIELD NICKEL!:crybaby2: Way to go notching that old nickel off the bucket list. That brooch is very nice looking too. You may not get much but, you get the GOOD STUFF! I like that.:headbang:

Wow talk about a great lunch break!

Really nice finds! That shield nickel is awesome!

I found a brooch just like that today ( and yes I looked for the stone )View attachment 1481193

Hi Truth1253. Definitely looks similar. If mine would have been gold or silver I may have dedicated more time to sifting, but plated brass most likely had a piece of cut glass in the center, probably not a 10 carat diamond...

Thx Kurios! I was psyched when I dug it and realized it was an unusual size. Bigger than a penny, but smaller than a normal nickel. Even though it was pretty toasty I knew it was something good as long as it did not end up being a shankless flatbutton. I dig lots of targets at lunch, just not sharing my hoard of shotgun shell ends with tnet...
