Luck of the Irish !!!

Had a few hammered silver Irish coins over the years. Never though lucky enough to find a farthing (until yesterday, that is). This tiny coin is a Dublin mint Edward I, minted circa 1282. Irish Edward I farthings are fairly scarce, this though is classed as the commonest variety.

No Westfront, Edward I was an English king, well loved also in Scotland.

Oh, an English Edward... being not very familar with all these kings i thought it was an irish Ed. Makes sense now. Thanks!

I expect with the small size, (about 1/3 gram as I understand it) lots were lost, but sink too deep, or maybe ignored ?

Hello Rick, they must have been very easy to lose, due to their tiny size. As for detecting them, over a few inches deep forget it.

So you still have OK hunting grounds available?

Very nice buddy. The farthings are very hard to find over here. I'm sure they were plentiful as a small denomination making change and such. But I have found a ton of half pennies and only one farthing. Congrats on a great first my friend

Hey Robert! Congrats on your find. I agree, that Edward I is the common one I am always finding here in western NC. I am like Vino when I find these and toss them in the back of the truck bed like IH pennies.
