Is it just me, or, do you guys have problems with the pinpointer going crazy sometimes?

Example...I' searching for a target in the hole and the pinpointer will start beeping whenever it touches something - anything. I normally just turn it off and then on again and that fixes the problem. However, seems to be happening more and more lately. Could it be the battery? I've changed batteries and still the same problem.

It doesn't happen all the time, but, on and off. Like it has a mind of it's own. One of the guesses I had was this...

I tend to actually probe or push my pinpointer into the dirt if I'm having a problem locating a target. When I'm a bit gentler, it seems as though it doesn't happen as often. Have any of you out there experienced this? For my money, the Garrett Propointer is worth every penny. I'd waste a LOT of time without it. However, don't know why it acts up like that sometimes. Was happening quite a bit today.

As I said, I'll get a signal and then the pinpointer will start to chatter wherever I point it. I heard you can de-tune these things. Have any of you tried this before?

I read that if you put a penny beneath the cover over the butt of the battery that it causes the battery to make better contact and stops that. Haven't tested it yet but give that a shot.

Mine will do that a lot if I push it into the dirt. I just try to dig enough dirt out so I don't have to push into it. You can prevent it all together if you push the tip of the pinpointer into something, then turn it on while pushing. Although I think this makes it lose some sensitivity.

I'm having the same problem, it just keeps chirping constantly. I thought it was the battery also but that didn't help any and I tried a brand new duracell battery and it doesn't work :icon_scratch:. I thought it was interferance from my detector so I would switch it off but that wouldn't help any either. :icon_scratch: If I have to put a penny in the battery compartment to keep it working then I would say the darn pointer is over priced. I never had problems like this with the White's or other pointers.
Is it anything to do with programing it as John Edmonton talks about. :hello2:Chime in John and give us your opinion sure would appreciate it. Thanks.

I have experienced the exact same problems. My first propointer got so bad with this that I sent it back to Garrett and they replaced it under warranty absolutely free :icon_thumright: but the replacement started the same thing after a few weeks but a new battery seemed to fix it. However I haven't used it much since the battery replacement as it got warm and I started mostly water hunting. I hope the propointers don't have some kind of inherent problem with them. Don't know about detuning them but I will look into this. I also use the same technique as the above poster in that I tend to push or scrape with the propointer as I thought it was designed to be used that way with the scraper blade and all so maybe it is just those of us that use it this way that are having these problems. I will be more gentle with it in the future and see if it helps. Only other problem I've had is the switch seems to get "weak" ie hard to turn on, push and it beeps then goes off, repeat. I use it on virtually every target so I would hate to know how many times I have turned that thing on and off. I do love the propointer though as it has saved me lots of time recovering targets and when I had sent the first one back in for repair it was hard to hunt without it, yes I am spoiled with it, very hard to go back to hunting without it. Thanks and sorry so long winded.
