The banks had no dime boxes that were not all solid 2011, so I decided to try a road trip in a new direction, towards Knoxville TN. Once I drove to within 30 miles of I-75 to begin my search at the small towns along the way, the trip was pretty much a waste. I kept getting told by tellers that a guy bought every half they had yesterday. Finally happened upon some of his dumps at a bank with a teller operated coin counter. The head teller said he had bought the $250 in halves they had in the vault, then dumped some of what he had searched there. She offered to sell me a bag with $177.50 in halves, so I accepted. Found a single 1968D Ken in that bag. One bank did have 4 new Strings halves rolls that yielded a pair of 2003D NIFCs. Scrounged up only a few loose halves, no luck there.
One bank near I-75 had a sign on the front door that there was a $20 fee to use the coin machine in the lobby. I was curious so I asked about the sign. I was told they did that because one guy kept bringing in thousands of dollars of halves at a time, a couple of times a week. They said the machine kept breaking down while he was doing it, and they were tired of paying to have it serviced.
At a somewhat closer bank a teller told me that another teller that has been off for 2 days has $14 in halves and some Ikes in her drawer, and she'll be back tomorrow. It's about a 70 mile round trip, and I won't have time to charge the car from solar if I head out early AM, but it might be worth a return trip to get there before the other halves buyer can strike again
I managed to scrounge up some dime CWR's on the trip, will go through those over the weekend.
