Howdy. I dug this seven pound plus solid brass relic several years ago in Dixon, Illinois beneath a section of the Illinois Central Railway where a bridge crossing the Rock River once stood. It was over a foot deep but, the signal just beckoned me to keep digging. My research led me to the Louisville, Texas, & New Orleans Railway. They were in business around 1888 I believe. The Illinois Central Railway admitted them access to their line around 1892.
It appears to be some type of a "split bushing" for an axle or some round shaft type thing. I don't know what the "JJ8" stamping means either. Anyone have a clue what this 7 pound brass train part might be? I have never managed to get this to a train person so I thought I'd post it here. Thanks for any information on this cool old relic. One of my personal favorites for sure. Recovered at night with my old DFX 300, Lesche, and Predator shovel.

It is roughly 6 5/8 inches long by 5 1/2 inches wide if this helps.
