What's the worst way to start a day of detecting? When you go to your favorite park and find out that they have closed the entire property to metal detecting! :BangHead:

I live close to a city owned park and it's my "go to" place when I only have an hour or two to detect. I've been detecting it for the past 3 years and it's where I found my first silver coin, my first gold ring and my first class ring. Today I was super excited to finally get out detecting, only to be completely shattered when the groundskeeper informed me that they are no longer allowing metal detecting.. What?
.
I briefly spoke to the manager of the park and he just made the rule change as of 3 days ago. I'm not sure that it has anything to do with the TV shows, but I would not doubt that it does, and I was not about to bring up the subject. The only good thing about it is that he seems to be open to allowing detecting if he can insure that detectorists won't be damaging the property. That's a tall order considering the rush of newbies that will be hitting the scene in the next few months. I'm going to work on a letter this weekend highlighting the positives of detecting (I've cleared buckets of glass and metal debris from the park over the years.) I'm also going to suggest a permit process to allow the park to keep tabs on those who may be doing damage. .

Now for the silver lining to my horrible day. ;D Since detecting is no longer allowed in my favorite park I hit up another spot a few miles down the road. I hunted the thick brush and in 3 hours scored 2 Silver Washingtons, 2 Mercs, a Silver War Nickel, 7 Wheaties and a Sterling Silver spoon. Not a bad hunt, but I could hardly enjoy it knowing that this may be my last chance to detect this park if the fallout continues. Happy hunting and enjoy it while you can!

I would advise you talking a bit more and asking why. It is always usefull to know what you are up against instead of speculating what you are up against.

Nice finds by the way.

Great finds. It's just a matter of time when you will see a bunch of a-holes with their new radio shack detectors out there who saw the shows you speak of. They have know idea how hard it is to find one good find. They will be digging every beep that comes and leaving a mess. I don't post much because most of you have been there and seen it. I may start to post only trash that I find to show what the real world detecting is all about.

That is sad news about your "go-to" park.

The fact you were able to speak with the groundskeeper in a diplomatic way and
also bring to his attention the amount of trash you've been pulling out can only
help your cause in the future.

It also couldn't hurt to carry a photo of some of the trash you've been pulling out.
One pic can be worth a thousand words. . . I started doing that last year and it's been
helpful to me on several occasions.

BTW, nice recoveries

Nice hunting.

I saw two episodes on Nat Geo, the guys looked liked they knew what they were doing but acted so stupid.

The American Digger show on Spike is crazy. It's wrestling meets relic hunting :laughing9: Rick Savage the wrestler is the star who supposedly owns a relic shop in Mechanicsville, VA :icon_scratch: :icon_scratch: I've lived a mile from Mechanicsville for 10+ years and never knew Rich Savage was selling Civil War relics in my back yard. :laughing9: The show is too over the top and looks fake. They're blowing crap up and digging with excavators lol.

Until it is verified that the shows caused such closings, don't put it on the shows.
Wait till we get verification.

All it takes is one fool to make a mess ( holes, trash, and so on), to get em closed.

I refuse to watch the show. Last thing I need to do is watch some trolls tearing up a yard in the name of making a quick buck. Next thing you know there will be a show called "Privy Diggers"......

That sucks, but I doubt it was the show. Detectorists aren't viewed in a great light to begin with. It could have been a guy who dug holes and didn't fill them in and a parent complained about holes. You just never know. I know most parks around where I live they won't let you detect and it's been that way for a long time. I'll do the mulched areas on tot-lots but I never go in the grass. To me it's the real life detectorists that ruin it for most of us. Too many want the treasure and don't care if they destroy property...it's the cold hard truth.

And really, come on...you think a show on metal detecting got huge ratings? Trust me...nobody knows about the show that I know of other than people here.

Actually the TV shows were just featured in a very negative light on our local news, so a lot of people outside of the metal detecting community are aware of them. It may be a complete coincidence, but this park has been extremely accommodating to detectorists in the past and I had just detected it a few weeks ago so something definitely changed their minds about detecting.

From speaking to the manager I think I have a fair chance in convincing him to reopen at least the beach area in the park. His major concern was the possible damage to the turf and the unfilled holes and I understand that, but the place is practically deserted from October to April, so I think I may have a shot in getting it opened up on a seasonal basis.

I can see that kind of coverage causing you lots of problems in the area. Sad but true.

does pay to find out more information, you may be able to instigate a change for the better......we are not at all like the "tards" :tard: on any of the TV shows...here in Ohio on our cable channel "Sprint" they have "American Diggers" another MDing show with a moronic drop-out crew alledgedly making money for people who allow them on their property....... :BangHead: :BangHead: :BangHead: Good luck and keep doing things the righteous way......

as predicted we can wait for verification but we all know they are just nipping it closed before it happens. Nice finds

That still doesn't mean every tom, dick and harry watched this show including the people who run the park. Hey, I would flat out ask the person why metal detecting has been banned. They will tell you the truth and I bet they won't say "it's because of that damn show "Diggers" on NatGeo! You know, I feel your pain. We aren't allowed to detect any parks around here...and I learned that after I bought my metal detector. Who knew something would be illegal, yet they will sell you a detector right up the road. It stinks, but that's the harsh reality of a hobby that consists of digging holes and people that aren't responsible diggers.

The way things are going, with metal detection being banned not only in parks, but states are banning it. It's sad what it's coming to. :dontknow:

I remember years back when they were about to ban metal detecting in Sacramento parks because people were digging holes and not filling them in.After the park crew watched the park for a whole low and behold those squirrels were digging holes and not bothering to fill in there holes and we got there blame. So from now on I never trust those squirrels ever again and do my best to cover there holes after them.

I actually had to stop detecting a section of another park because of squirrels. No matter how completely I repaired the holes they would dig up just above every plug I had left behind :laughing1:

I realize that it might not be directly related to the show, and I said so in my original post. The timing just seems awfully suspicious. :icon_scratch:
