Lost Canyon

We are new to treasure hunting and we recently read about lost canyon. We have camped near clear creek reservoir and never realized how much history is in that area, specially with lost canyon just north of us. Has anyone searched that area? Any stories about the area? Any books written about the area?

Most of what you will hear will be just that, Hearsay.
There are recorded events in Colorado history that require many hours of research to confirm before going on a goose hunt.

Some of the stories are just that. Stories.
They are made up surrounding actual evens and embellished to bring in tourism.

So be very careful when believing all you hear and always research thoroughly before setting out.
If you are deciding to chase a legend find out how plausible it is.
Unless you just need to have the story to legitimise the trip... and that's cool too.

Lost Canyon has a lot to offer. The Gold Prospectors of Colorado and the BLM have worked closely together to open an area for prospectors. It's on the Powerline Rd. All types of equipment can be used there except dredges as the stream is too small. Last summer they were finding some nice gold highbanking. The area is full of history and if you like to hike, the forest has a lot of old cabins and test holes. There are mines there but most of them have been caved in by the Forest Service many years ago when a big forest fire burned there. At the top of Lost Canyon is the Gold Basin Placer and it's a big operation or was until recently. I believe two young men have it and are working it now or were last summer. Last I heard it was up for sale again. With the snows in the high country right now it will probably be late Spring before you can get in there.
Lost Canyon is a really wonderful place to go and you can camp up by the meadows and it's free. Keep in mind there is no water or toilets as this is the old fashioned kind of camping. If you decide to go see it...enjoy it's a truly beautiful place !!
