I'm just curious, those of you that will take loose rolls or what tellers have in their till, what is your average for finding keepers. I mean all silver not just pre 65... I ended up with 4 rolls and 12 bucks worth of loose halves yesterday and I ended up with 1 67... I think my wife even enjoys hunting the coins with me!!

Last time I found silver (halves only) in a tellers coin try half of what he had was silver.

Granted he only had two halves, but one was a Franklin.

Other than that time, I get very few silvers from the tellers coin tray. Silver is very easy to spot. Look for the dull white stripe amoung all the red clad. If you see it then ask to buy what they have.

Many times when a teller only has a few coins they will take they out out the tray and put them on the counter to prove that is all they have. This is an even bettertime to get a closer look to check for silver.

Not counting boxes, I get most silver from customer returned rolled halves. Always ask if they have any in the vault or if other tellers have any.

I got two 67's and a 64 from three different teller trays last week. Banks only had one or two halves each most places I went. I think I bought a total of about $40 in halves that day. One teller had an Ike dollar and asked if I wanted it, so I got that too, what the heck.

started getting back to CRH'ing today and hit the banks hard and picked up about $20 loose halves. 1st bank i went to i was looking in the coin tray and i saw the silver. the teller says here's a silver one. you can have it i have enough at home. it was a 64. how nice of her to let me have it. lol!!!

I have been tracking my coins in two separate categories
machine rolled coins vs. loose (coin machine bags, out of the tills, or hand rolled, etc.)

Out of $16330 in machine rolled halves (1633 rolls) I have gotten
8 Walkers
6 Franklins
31 - 90% Kennedy
65 - 40% Kennedy
-----------------
110 silver halves

so on a per roll rate that would be 110 / 1633 = 0.067 silver halves per roll
Or put another way is 14.84 rolls per silver half.

Out of $14901.50 in loose halves (1490.15 rolls) I have gotten
5 Walkers
18 Franklins
101 - 90% Kennedy
369 - 40% Kennedy
-----------------
493 silver halves

so on a per roll rate that would be 493 / 1490.15 = 0.331 silver halves per roll
Or put another way is 3.02 rolls per silver half.

I have put some thought into it and believe the difference is that with fed boxes you are much more likely to get someone else's rejects. This is because those who search cause the halves to turn over frequently at their dump banks and don't really spread them out. Therefore, anyone else buying from the other person's dump will find lots of rejects and maybe get lucky and find a few others mixed in as well.

With the loose coins I find my best luck is typically with the bags from coin machines (as long as there isn't someone who frequently uses that bank as a dump bank and the tellers don't search it themselves). Most times I find these bags have been sitting for a while (months/years) so they slowly collect halves over time and don't really get hit with someone's large reject pile. These are the same bags that when filled and turned in to the Fed produce the really good boxes. By buying the bags I am just pre-emptively skipping the bulk of the reject searches and concentrating on the good stuff.

At least that's my opinion for the area I live in...can't say the same applies elsewhere.

Went to one bank yesterday, asked for halves. they said they had one. in fact the teller held it up and said and its silver. i said i would take it. 100% results. i really believe the biggest finds are that way. I once got 3 rolls, one solid silver. once 20 rolls and 3 solid silver and two rolls 18/20 silver. I do believe that trays and rolls brought in, not boxes give the greatest results.

I have to agree with GMan except I don't have the math to back it up. It looks like his average is right in line with your results. The loose rolls I don't like are the $200 and above. More than likely they are someones dump but every now and then you get an "old lady" drop.
