You didn't mention what type of metal this is made of, but it looks to be iron?
My first thought was the same as Tommy... it's cast furniture hardware, maybe part of an escutcheon plate.

But these would tend to be made of brass, because iron would eventually rust in the wood and become unsightly over time.
