Hi Folks,

My 8 year old and I just unearthed this today. Looks like a small horseshoe and has the patina of copper. This was found at a known plantation sight in South Louisiana and also a Civil War site.

It is approximately 2" by 1.5". It has 3 small holes in it and 3 small "teats" on it. Any ideas?

It is a heel plate used to prevent wear on a heel from a shoe or boot. They came in many patterns. Yours is probably from a woman's shoe.

Spats got it. That type is odd probably for winter use.

Jeb, there is one here that is almost identical to the one you found.

Makes perfect sense. Thanks very much for the quick response. Spats, you are right, that one is almost identical! Any idea how old?

Yep, it's definitely a heel plate. I've found quiet a few, but never one as nice as that one, nice find! "D"

My guess as to age would be nineteenth century to early twentieth century. Sorry I can't nail it down more. Maybe someone can.
