Looks as if it might be a late 18th century copper button, sometimes referred to (especially by British collectors) as "dandy buttons." It's not unusual for those to be nearly silver dollar size. If the metal is fairly thick and really doesn't look like copper— it's hard to be sure from the photo— then it might be tombac, a kind of alloy containing zinc, tin, copper, and sometimes arsenic or other metals.
