I detected this in Cherry grove, NC this morning. It is heavy and about the height of a quarter and approx. 3/4 inches diameter. It has sharp spiral groves from point to tail. The back is perfectly flat and shows no signs there was ever a shaft or post attached. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Any idea? Steel? Lead? Zinc? other?

It appears to be hardened steel. I dont have a magnet available at the moment but it isn't lead. It is dense and heavy. Originally thought it might be lead but it is not.
NOTE: I just found a magnet and this thing is slightly magnetic. The magnet wants to hold but slides off.

Looks like a broken at the shank Ball end carbide bit. I've sold them in the industrial market.

OK, Great! Thanks to you all! This makes sense. It was just so perfectly flat across the base that I didn't think it had a shaft on it. Thanks again. I will mark it Solved.
