I have been looking for an old picnic place. It is near a large creek near where i live. There is another place near Kalamazoo Michigan where i used to live it was always trying to find also. The two places flood a lot and a lot of river , (creek bottom) fill the areas with sand type dirt. I am believing they fill in more dirt sand to where a detecdtor can not find the items.Have any of you experienced situations like this. What can be done to improve my chances in this type places ?

ANY INPUT is GREATLY APPRECIATED 1!!

Years ago, I’d go river-area hunting when we had unusually low water levels. We had a drought year in the 80s. I think 85 or 86. Hunted sandbars that weren’t normally there, and riverbanks. We found a lot of car parts, fence wire, and an old outboard. Low water won’t solve the deep sand issue, unless it tapers off near the water edge.

Yes, found an old picnic groove myself on the bottomland, right next to the river. No good signals due to flooding over the years, not to mention, it was soft bottom land soil/sand, so everything hand sunk in. The only place to hunt would be the creek bed or the banks which I'm going to have a go at one of these years.

Gare if you have a look at the base of the trees and see the crowning (ground sloping away from the base/root ball) then there isn't a lot of build up from flooding.
If the trees look like a power pole stuck in the ground then there is a build up around the tree of soil.
It's a general basis when I used to hunt in the urban settings.

GREAT IDEA THanks :)

Experience has taught me to avoid areas prone to flooding. Nothing like getting a good signal only to dig down 18" and get a modern beer can.

I do not see many tree roots in the area

BF 58 I just wonder if there was some kind of shelter or building where the pump housing is. If there was it could be the reason the pump was built in it and the sand just filled in all over where the building was. This is a lot of IF's BUT no records of it are very clear. . After 3 HOURS of searching with my detector and only getting 4 SIGNALS has me frowning

So hard to tell without some history. Could have been an old wash house or summer kitchen there. These both normally had pitcher pumps. Here is my current site. You can see 2 sand points close together. This tells me the spot was used for many years. When a sand point became unusable, often times another was driven close by. It may have been to fill the trough.? So far I got and old license plate, fence wire and nails. Good luck with your pursuit and keep posting the progress. I’m interested to see any finds.

Two thoughts for you. Pump with benches close for washing - cooking on those pic nics. Another factor. Start looking down stream! All those years of water flow - I'll bet there's very very little left where it was dropped. Most of the goodies have been carried down stream.

Go where the pump is , and dig a small maybe two feet wide trench. Look at the sediment layers and you should get a pretty good idea of how much overburden is on top of your goodies.

Look for obstructions down stream like old fences stc and paths where the river changed course.
