Hello. A couple of nights ago I was flipping through Ebay and saw a V Nickel lot that was mislabeled as a different type (one that doesn't actually exist. For some reason I opened the listed and looked through some of the detailed pictures. Flat out in the middle of the lot is what looks to be an 1886 in decent shape, along with 48 other misc avg circ V's. The description is all wrong and pictures are substandard so I figure this is right up my alley. I ended up winning the lot for $134. I figured the common V's were worth about $0.50 each and I made a $110 gamble on the '86. Seemed weird to me that there'd be a great coin like that in the middle of a bunch of junk. Probably going to get hosed but hey, it's just money.

So today I get a package in the mail. I can hear coins clanking around in the package. I open up the package and find an old tin band-aid canister with all the V nickel just loose inside the tin can. I dump them out half expecting the '86 either isn't in there or I misread the date. But sure enough out rolls the '86, just like in the pictures. I don't particularly collect V nickels, they're not really a favorite of mine and I know basically nothing about grading. I did go to the PCGS photo-grade website, which is awesome, and I'm guessing the '86 is in the VF-12 range, maybe a little higher. If anyone is willing to offer an opinion as to the grade of the coin I'd appreciate it, both for the 2nd opinion and to help me improve my own grading skills. Thoughts on value would be interesting as well. Thanks for looking.

You did good! The 1886 Liberty "V" Nickel is at least a VG-10 but teters very close to F-12 and should be a $300+ coin. However, prices are all over the place for similar to near similar coins on eBay, so it is a toss up as to what it might fetch if you put it back on eBay.

Frank - Thanks for the feedback. I feel good you're grading about where I was. I was laughing when I thought about it bouncing around in a tin can in the mail for the last three days.

I think it's a pretty solid F-12. Nice score!

According to the red book grading it's an F-12 and worth $425. However, one side is rougher than the other so I would think a vg-8 to vg-10, which still puts her at a minimum $320.

I concluded, before I read the other responses, so I think there's a consensus. Congrats that's awe$ome

-Lady Liberty is hot stuff...especially on a coin

I'd say F15. It has a solid LIBERTY & would probably go VF but the hair detail isn't there.
Cool coin. I have it's twin sister '12S (mine's a F15 PCGS).

UPDATE - way old thread but I just got the coin back from NGC and sure as heck it got an F-12 grade, right about where we all thought it would go.

Thanks.
