hello j, best for the beach (and anywhere else) are the minelab multi freq machines.i've seen sovereigns, quattros and explorer xs's for less than $400.read some reviews, they are just great all around machines.....hh...jb

than ks for the advice... I have narrowed my search down to garrett ace 350 or minelab x-terra 305. I think I will try and find a reasonable 305 for sale as i like the variable coil frequency idea

but you stated you wanted to get down in the wet salt sand? Did you change your mind and only want to hunt in the dry sand?

Johnyboy is correct, you need a multi frequency machine to efficiently hunt the wet sand. I would look for a Minelab Sovereign, best machine for saltwater hunting in your price range.

No u still wanna hunt wet salt sand. U was under the impression the xterra 305 would hunt wet salt sand...

You can use it in the wet sand just like any detector. It even has a salt mode but... the machine isn't designed to be used at the beach. Any machine can be used in the wet salt sand but the trade off is any kind of depth and the machine will not run stable. I started with an Xterra 70 and because I'm a beach hunter, it was very frustrating. I switch to an Excalibur and depending on the beach have picked up dimes at 18". My beach machines now consist of two custom Excaliburs, a Sovereign GT, and a CTX. I have more gold and silver jewelry than my wife. Just remember, one good ring find can pay for your detector. Use the wrong detector and you may be leaving the gold and silver for someone else.
