Okay, so I'm going up to Lake McConaughy for a 4 day vacation and HECK YES I'LL BE DIGGING!

However, I live in Colorado and I don't encounter sandy beaches much, so I figured I'd ask some pros for some advice.

The place I'll most likely be digging will be dry sand and wet sand.  I don't plan on digging in too deep of water either, maybe a couple of inches deep but that's all.

I was looking at scoops, and basically what I'm looking for is an all purpose sand scoop, cheap but durable, and sifting speed is no big deal for me.

This style seems to be the one I'm going to go with: http://www.rtgstore.com/scoops/723big.jpg

I'm mainly concerned about catching items, like I don't want coins or rings to fall through holes.

Please let me know designs and brands that you would recommend. Thanks!

I've bought several beach/sand scoops from Kevin Reilly(rtgstore/Reilly's Treasured Gold) since he's located not to far from my home. The type you use is personal preference. I had to buy different styles/types until I found a couple that suits me. The one you showed in the pic will work well for coins, jewelry, etc. as will the others he sells.

If you have any questions, just call him, he's very friendly and helpful!

Hope this helps a little :D

Reilly's scoops are fine and strong. I too need different types for different bottom types. The two picks are two of the ones I like.

Right on! Thanks for your help!!

Since I don't have a lot of time left to get one of these, I went to the store and picked one up already!

Here's basically the one I got.

It's not that exact one, it doesn't have that handle, and it's galvanized or whatever so it won't rust.

What do you think??

It's funny that you posted that picture. That's the 1st scoop I purchased from Reilly's. Works good, but I ended up gettin another one with the long handle and the same basket like the picture you posted. That one totally caved in when I used it in the wet sand. To much weight on it using my foot to dig it in.

I then bought a heavy duty long handled monster scoop with a 6" wide bucket and it works excellent in the water. If I'm working the dry sand I have a Aluminum long handled scoop with a 5" bucket. It's a lot lighter than the water scoop.

Anyway I think if your only going for a few days the one you have pictured should work fine for you. Doesn't make sense payin a hundred bucks for a heavy duty scoop.

Good luck!

I purchased one identical to i,herbie except it came with a long handle extension (threaded screw-on).

Best of two worlds. Wet sand can be a problem and sifts much more easily than the drilled type.

Also, the longer handled models can be foot assisted.

Herbie, the scoop on the left is what I use when I hunt the dry sand. It's aluminum and very light. The one on the right is my water scoop. Stainless steel and pretty heavy, but not bad in the water.

That's the same guy I bought my water scoop from. Definitly makes a quality product! That's the new design he just recently came out with. I was already checking it out, but really didn't want to spend another $114 just to try it. Looks like it'll cut through anything! I'll just stick with the round one till it rots LOL. The smaller one was from Reilly's
