Re: Ever see one of these before?

All I can say right now is it's a historical medal. Obviously Italian, gotta run for now.

Thanks thats a very interesting and helpful link! Just still kinda stumped as to this things purpose, its apparently not any kind of currency at least I wouldnt think so, And how the heck does this thing end up in wv, maybe someone else out there may have found one of these or may know of its purpose. Re: Ever see one of these before?

Cool token!

CENTENA is probably CENTENARIO (Centennial in English)

Commemorating the 4 centennial (400 years)

So, figure out what happened in 1507 and there ya have it!

(Actually, I'm still looking at this one...) ;D

Re: Ever see one of these before?

Francesco d’Alessio, founder of the Minimi Order was born here. He was better known as San Francesco of Paola (1416-1507), patron saint of Calabria. Following a life spent as a hermit, which saw him forever taking the part of the weak, Francesco was proclaimed Saint on 1st May 1519.

1907 was 400 years since the death of San Francesco of Paola.

I think the other folks are right. It's most likely an ecclesiastical commemorative piece.

Fire the pic's off in an email to the Vatican. Worst that can happen is they ignore you. Gotta be worth a try? :dontknow:
