Thats a funeral crucifix to be placed on a coffin. I have one very similar. Mine appears to be a silver/lead/ pewter alloy. I will search for the old thread.

When my Mom died, I shined it up and placed my crucifix on her coffin at the funeral because she always liked it. I wanted to bury it with her but decided to keep it. I dont think they usually go into the ground.
