I took this to a coin dealer (not to sell, just to get an opinion) and he was very insulting and completely unhelpful. So I'm hoping to get some help here! I am just wondering if anyone thinks this could be an "s" over "s" mint mark or if it is something else, or nothing at all. To me, it looks like an "s" over "s" or a filled "s", I just dont know. I do know it is the smaller "s", as it is way smaller than the "s" on my 1890 seated dime, but it also looks funny to me so I am hoping to get some "honest" insight! Even tho I told the coin dealer it was not for sale, he told me he wanted it and he would give me $2.00 for it, and that it was only a "Plain Jane"(His words) seated dime. I told him that even if it was a "Plain Jane", it would be worth much more than $2.00, and even IF i was selling it, I would not sell it to him. I also told him I would not be coming back and I would tell all my friends about his generous "offer". Any how....thanks for looking and thanks in advance for any help!

From the pictures I can't really tell whether this would be an S/S, I know that there are some known, but haven't been able to get a high resolution image of one online to compare yours to and I don't have a copy of the Cherrypicker's Guide that has seated dimes in it.

You've got to understand though that many (most in fact) dealers don't deal with minor varieties like that and so they're not going to pay specialty prices for a coin that they can't sell for a higher price than just a vanilla seated dime. Most of the dealers around here will pay about $2-3 for a seated dime in your condition/a common date like yours, they're just too common and hard to sell for most coin dealers, not many people really want to pay a lot of money for a circulated, common seated dime. Now a Mint state or AU example on the other hand...

Ok, I pulled out my 1890S and took a close look at it. The "S" looks very much like your 1891S in both size and design. Mine is slightly more worn, which gives it an even more pronounced boxed or filled look. My current Red Book lists the small and large variety "S" as existing in 1890, but no mention of 1891. Based on the above, I would guess yours is probably the standard, large variety, but certainly worth more than 2 bucks (maybe $20 in a RETAIL setting).

I'm working on getting the ability to post high definition pictures on the site, but I' m not there yet. HTH

Wow sorry to hear about your bad coin dealer visit. Where was this?

Having dealt with coin dealers for many years.....

Remember, the grading or ID of a coin depends on whether you are buying, or selling.....
