Hello All I'm new to this site and MDing. I have been reading with great intrest the many good posts. I would like to ask if anyone could help with my decision on purchasing a detector. I have looked at the Whites Classic ID. I want a good detector for all around use, general hunting and also relics. If any one has a better suggestion or any info on the Classic ID I would be very greatful. I would like to stay under 450.00 or so.
Thanks for your time. :) I hope to learn from everyone and have a good start to my new hobby.

Hello and nice to have you as a part of the detecting lor....Picking a detector is an interesting decision..I started with a Whites 5900 and found a number nice items..after a few years I went to the whites XLT and I liked the machine very much ,and found a number of deep targets,, coins, relics ,you name it plus some junk like all detectorists find . It all depends where your looking, like any machine you have to read the manuel and practice with it ...But a couple of years ago I started useing the Minelab Explorer 2. This machine is a great machine but the cost is alittle more than you mentioned you want to spend, but for me it works very well and have had great success in those areas that have been hunted out.and those deep hard to find targets...hope this helps good luck .....Seeker

Thanks for the advise! I am planing on making a purchase in a few weeks and it really is a hard decision. I have several locations already picked out to hunt when I get my detector. There are several civil war locations in my area and I have permission to hunt a large part of them. The place I really want to get started on is a WW II Army base that the company I work for purchased in 1949. This base had around 450 buildings and at its peak 28,000 people. I have heard stories from the old timers that there was a lot of good stuff buried here. Does any one have any experiance hunting old military bases? Any suggestions

u can check around on a newer top of the line machine, but buy it used, most them u can get half price from a dearler, r try on line..

Hello, I would suggest that you try one of the Prizm detectors, they range from $200-$500 with coupon, and all are equipped with Target ID like the classic ID, but if you go with the Prizm III, IV, or V then you add depth reading, tone ID/autonotch, and VCO pinpointing/Prizm 950 coil, respectively. The Classic series are great detectors but the Prizm series is the newer technology for cheaper, plus they come with more features, and they only weigh 2.5 lbs too!

I have a Prizm III and I love it, I thought about getting a IV or V but I don't like to discriminate because I'm afraid of walking over a good target, so the only thing that I discriminate while hunting is Iron, and I didn't think that it would make much sense to pay more for features that I would not use.
The target ID, and pinpoint are very accurate, particularly on coins, and the depth reading is also very accurate. You can also swing the Prizm all day without wearing out your arm because it is so light

Hope this helps, and we look forward to seeing your finds!!

I am new to MDing too and I just bought a used Fisher 1270 for $300.00 w/good set of KOSS Headphones. I absolutley love it and have no complaints at all. I have been using it for about a month so far. A new one is aroud 550 or 600.00 but you can find used ones in great shape like mine. Best of luck to you. Whatever you get you will enjoy being out in the field.

Hello all. I finally decided on the cibola, ordered it Monday and received it yesterday. It was dark when I got home but of course I had to try it out. My house was built in the early 30's so I figured I might find something fairly old. I started in the front yard and had a couple of hits right off. I dug a wheat penny and a dime, not a great haul but it was still fun.
I will be sure to keep you guys updated on my finds and on the performance of the cibola. Again thanks for all the help.

Hello all. Well I finally received my Cibola, and I am very pleased. I am no expert on detectors but this machine is very easy to use, and so far I have no complaints. I have only had time to detect in my yard and have found several wheat pennies a couple of quarters an old amusement token from around 1930 along with some pieces of a cast iron kettle. Of course I have found the usual junk but it helps me learn the machine. Hopefully this weekend I will be able to hunt a house site from around 1820. I will post some photos of anything of intrest I find this weekend.
Thanks and if anyone has any questions about the cibola please let me know.
