It's that time of the year where the Blue Heron returns to hunt Chipmunks.

I wish he was here hunting for them. Once you start seeing one chipmunk you already have a problem. One year I trapped over 20 of them at home. They aren't the cute little critters some think they are. They are destructive little rascals that will even get under your house and tear out the insulation among other things.

I don't have herons in my back yard, so I have to use a BB gun and rat traps to get rid of chipmunks. The little stinkers dug up half of my pea seeds. Now they are after my green strawberries. Gotta get rid of the chipmunks before my blueberries ripen.

4 years ago we had a huge problem with them.
3 yrs ago the Heron would get 4or5 every morning.
Then it started going through the bush looking for them.
I think we have 2 now.
Both are really scared most of the time.

There always seems to be an uptick in one species or other.
Now it seems to be squirrels
Had 14 @ the feeder one day this winter.

The Mrs just caught one eating a flower plant.
"Need to start shooting those *#**... things!" :laughing7:

I first thought this was kind of a joke with the heron eating them. We don't have them down here. Thought it was funny. Didn't know they were such a nuisance. Good for the heron keeping varmints in check!

It's a n annual event now.

I don't think people realize how much of a challenge it is to actually hit a chipmunk. They are extremely quick and very twitchy. To make matters worse their size is also a factor. At a distance of 35 yards it gets even harder but it can be done with the right tools. My Stoeger X20S I went through and tuned up has an affectionate nickname I gave it due to it's ability to pound chipfunks. "Death Beauty". I haven't shot a chipmunk with a pellet in a few years now. From time to time I still make sure I can hit the smallest spinner target I have set up at 35 yards with it. It takes a special pellet specific to the task. In the case of this particular air rifle it's the JSB Match Diablo "Diabolic" 8.44 gr with a 4.52mm head size. UTG 4x32 AO scope on a one piece mount. All you hear when that thing goes off is "thwap". If the target is the spinner you hear the magical ting sound. If it is a chipmunk it is a sickening slap...

I have another one too, a RWS 34P. It's more of a target plinker. Lotta work went into that one. They are known to have barrel droop so you have to get a scope elevation compensating mount for it. I went through that one too. It's smooth but doesn't have the power of the Stoeger X20S. Here's a 15 yd 10 shot group out of the RWS 34P after a new seal, compression chamber polish, trigger sear polish, spring and top hat kit, and numerous other customizations including removing the horrible rough cocking. Smooth as butter now. An added bonus is a pic I took after new seal installation and burnishing in some moly to the seal itself and piston. 6 yrs ago. Have a PDF of the whole thing I posted up back then too.

I also have a chip monk problem living in the woods.
I've found that peanut butter on rat traps works
Problem is; they also attract snakes looking. We live in copper head and rattler area
Shoo, go away
