looking for Brookings Oregon prospectors

so im new to prospecting.. i have a 3 foot sluice, a classifier, big square pan, small square pan, a small round pan, hammer, various crowbars, shovel, wetsuit,mask and snorkel, tweezers, glass vile, a ford escort... all ive found are 3 specks so small i can hardly pick up with tweezers. any body have any tips or suggestions?
 

Start moving some more material through that sluice and get the material from as close to the water and bedrock as pos., pan it after each 5 gallon bucket and get the buckets from dif spots and you will get an idea of where its at and where its not.
 

is there any maps for old claims around here? where would i find them?

my worry is that im just not in the right spot geographically. i know it takes heat and other stuff w water to make gold veigns but i think i would feel better if i knew there were claims here before( u kno, what creeks ect..)

A quick search of the internet with key words like sluice gold and brookings netted this in less than 5 minutes, give it a try thats how we do...Northeast of Brookings to headwaters of the Chetco River, located at township 38S and range 10W, near center of section 26 you will find the Frazier Mine which was a rich producer of lode gold associated with pyrite. The Golden Eagle Mine was a hydraulic placer gold operation. Near head of Slide Creek the Golden Dream Mine was a large lode gold operation. In the center section 23, the Peck Mine was a good producer of lode gold. Near edge of section 35, the Young Mine had rich pockets of free gold. In section 10, the Hoover Gulch Mine, worked intermittently since 1900 for its lode gold.
 

no.. is it worth while to try? and if so do i set up the sluice... theres a creek that drains onto the beach. i noticed black sand every where on a beach near here.
and thanks gravelwasher for your reply. your nickname kept comming to mind yesterday as i was carrying 3/4 full buckets of gravel to the sluice 100 feet away..... my hip and back is sore today!lol

If you leave your five gallon bucket by the sluice with a classifier in it and only haul the 2 gallon buckets past that makes it a lot better on the back. Good luck and keep testing.
 

ohh my gosh!! i found gold!!!!! i found more gold in my first handfull of sand today than i have moving a few tones of gravel in the stream! speckels but they do look cool under my magnifier.
 

yea... it would take me 1000years to make enough money to pay for the gas it cost to get there...

cptjjd make sure you get a permit to work on the beach they are free, jog has some info on this he might even have the E-mail address of the person to get the permit from. IMO the best sluice to use on the beach is a drop riffle, no carpet or miners moss just 6 riffles and some ribbed matting at the beginning. It would be easy to make, take a 3' by 6" piece of wood measure up 5" from one end and cut a groove ½"X½" across the board, measure up 3" from that groove and cut another, continue cutting grooves 3" apart until you have 6 grooves. Glue and screw 1X3 pieces along the sides and then give it a couple good coats fo marine varnish. Afte it dry glue a 6X6 piece of grooved matting from the last groove toward the mouth of the sluice. Simple to make and it "will" get that beach gold.

You might try scraping some of the black sand off the top where you found it at the beach and try panning it, you never know......... I just found some here awhile back where there isn't supposed to be any gold.
 

thanks gramps for the tips. ill start making that today. and man oh man the sand is heavy!!! i only had a 1/2 bucket and the back of my car sank down. and my bucket is shapped like an egg now! man o man im excited.

Here is the E-mail addy for the guy in charge of the southern OR beaches. BTW the permit is free all you do is tell them where you are going to prospect (no nat. or state parks), you can do it all by E-mail.

cptjjd - Check your local library for Gold in Oregon books.
There is a reason there is a town called Gold Beach !
Lots of black sands even up as far as Nehalem River.
Fine gold but it is there .

i set up that makeshift sluice and my god.. now im getting 50 -200 pieces of gold in it to pan out... YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYY
