My boyfriend received this rock from his grandmother, but we haven't had any luck trying to figure out what it is. Any help or suggestions would be helpful.

The only way I know to describe it, is that it looks like plant like pieces encased in resin. The outer part is very smooth and almost glass like, but with a brown tint. The bottom is rough with the brown crystal pieces.

Thanks for reading!

It looks like a rutilated quartz crystal to me. The reddish lines in it are the rutile (titanium dioxide) crystals. This happens a lot. It's a very nice specimen.

Thank you! After looking at a few other samples, it does appear to be very similar. I appreciate you pointing me in the right direction.

You can carve rutilated quartz with diamond burs and a Dremel using a water mist for lubrication. Here's a rutilated duck I carved a while back. Gary

I would just like to applaud you on the excellent pictures. This is one of the best examples I have seen for these reasons:

1) Very clear crisp close ups with NO blurriness.

2) The natural lighting is superb. No glare, but nice and bright.

3) You got all angles of the stone.

I feel like this is one of THE best examples for identification pics I have seen. Better than I have even done in the past.
I just wanted to put that out there for others wanting Identification of their stones.
