My mother is a high school English literature teacher in southeastern Pennsylvania. As part of her curriculum she does a huge unit on Slave Narratives, where they explore firsthand accounts of slavery in the south, Underground Railroad trips, creative writing done by former slaves, and so on.
She and I both feel that it would be a huge educational benefit to be able to bring actual history into her classroom, and it would allow her students to fully and more realistically imagine themselves in the places of those whom they are reading about. So, I want to help Mom start a collection of such original period artifacts.
Examples of the artifacts I'm thinking of:
Tags
Bracelets
Shackles
Photographs
Plantation maps
Documents - transactions, wills, etc
We would obviously accept anyone willing to donate anything but will try to pay for things we can afford. Please PM me with questions or items to offer.
