Hi;

Not sure if anyone out there has some sort of stirrup chart but I'm hoping to get a specific period on a stirrup I found a while back. It is iron, triangular in shape. The base is six inches wide by two inches deep. The stirrup stands 5.5 inches tall with no seams, cast marks, or maker's marks. Stirrup..JPG

The triangular iron item you have is, I believe, not actually a riding stirrup. The shape, style, and size, is more consistent with a functional iron hardware piece, for attachment of a chain to a beam. Seems more like a wagon part, farming piece, or logging application. At the moment I cannot place my finger on the idea, yet I'm quite certain similar pieces are something I have dug and/or seen over the years.

Hopefully some of our other knowledgeable forum members will drop by, with a more precise identification.

Very good point. I made the assumption based on the shape, but what you state is logical. I'd be curious what this item was used on.

Looks hand forged. If so, we can only guess what why it was made. Lower left corner looks forge welded. Very interesting find. Thanks for sharing.
