Since selling my AT-Pro, I have been without a water detector. I am limited with budget, so I won't be interested in anything over $1000. I would rather keep it under $650 or so. I will be hunting primarily fresh water lakes, but would like to have a machine that is also stable in salt water. I loved my AT-Pro, but I do not need a machine for land detecting since I have the Deus. I would consider another AT-Pro or an AT-Gold, but would prefer something that will be more specialized for the water and tuned to find small gold. I've read good things about the Tiger Shark and have it on my short list. I would like to hear people's opinions on the positives of water machines you have used in the price range I mentioned. Used machines are fine by me, as long as they work8-) Please refrain from citing negatives about any particular machine on the main forum, but please feel free to be critical in a PM.

This use to be a much narrower and easier question/answer then it is today. Best advice, stick with a reputable machine with a positive long running history and good shopping for a good used one on ebay. If you don't mind a PI machine then a new sand shark is close to budget new and it has a lifetime warranty. But if you want a quality VLF beach and water machine then your budget requires that go used. Excals and CZ-20/21's lead this pack.

Tiger shark is the best dedicated fresh water machine on the market - period. In salwater it sucks, just like every other single frequency VLF detector. I love my Sand Shark on wet saltwater sand and in saltwater, but it is a dig EVERYTHING machine.
