Hello there,

I am ready to get into MDing, and I know many coins will be found. Can anyone recommend a book or a web site that will tell me what coins are rare and what coins to look for? I dont want the unfortunate act of cashing a coin that is worth a lot of money. While reading many posts, I see many dimes, pennies, nickels, and quarters that look fairly normal but are in fact hidden treasures. I want to be able to determine which coins have value. Thanks for any help on this matter.

Re: Coin Identifyer Book

Hey, JohnnyBoy...

Welcome to TNet and the world's greatest hobby!

For U.S. coins, get a copy of the Red Book (A Guidebook of United States Coins) by R.S. Yeoman for retail values; wholesale, the Blue Book (Handbook of United States Coins) by the same author. Any coin shop and most bookstores and libraries will have copies. For grading, try Photograde by James F. Ruddy.

For foreign coins, use Krause & Mishler's Standard Catalog of World Coins. There are four volumes, covering the 17th through the 20th centuries. Most places that have the Red Book and Blue Book will also have these, or can get them for you. They're fairly expensive, though, so you might try picking up fairly recent used editions on eBay or half.com

A good general guide to tokens is Tokens and Medals by Alpert & Elman. Some stores that stock the coin books will have this one, too.

I think most or all of the above can also be ordered from BookMart at http://www.treasurenet.com/westeast/. Look for the link on the left side of the page.

Best of luck, and I'll be watching for your future posts and finds!

Along with those excellent references, try the "Cherrypickers Guide" by Fivaz/Stanton, lists varieties and errors for US half cents, cents, two cents, three cents, and Nickel coins. Should be a volume 2 coming out this fall- I've heard, covering larger denominations too.

Sounds Great to me!! However, looking back at the subject of my post it looks as though I should be buying a dictionary and not a coin book
