Lookie what I found... Button, but I don't know what kind???

Hello all,

Please help me ID this button. I've been killing myself at this old two-story log cabin that looks like there should be tons of good stuff around, but all I find is nails and tin. This is truly the best thing I've found yet. I know the trash gets in the way, but jeez louweez... How long does it take to clean the crap... I can turn in a circle with my ACE and it sounds like high noon in a clock factory. I've been thinking about getting a new Whites, but will it help me???

Sorry to travel off subject... I had a nice three-hour hunt and found this button, a squashed thimble and tons of crap...

Please help me id this thing. I cannot see any writing on the back. If it helps, this is a MO find.

Thanks again,

Saftgeek...

Looks to be a Union General Service Infantry button from the CW period. Thats a nice find!

That's an awesome US Army Infantry Button... nice!

However... is it CW?

It looks like it's CW era... I mean the design matches the CW era buttons very closely. The US Army used the Eagle & Shield as far back as 1790s. And, it was in use through the CW, through the Indian Wars, and post Indian wars up till 1902. In 1902 the US Army changed to the "Great Seal" Button.

Saying your button is a "CW Artifact" is tricky unless you found it on a battlefield, campsite, or fort in which case it's a no-brainer - or - the back mark indicates it's manufacture dates. The lack of a back mark is interesting and I have many that are also unmarked. Being your location is MO, I am sure you know there is a very high chance your button is CW. Either way I think it's a great find and I appreciate you letting me comment here in your topic.
