Did you check them with a magnet to determine they were nonferrous?

Being positioned on top of a hill it is a good place for look out for and/or to offer protection to a road/trade route in the valley below. Consider looking on old maps/history books to see if they make mention of that. In addition to desertexplorer's suggestion, consider scratching one of the stones and posting another picture. Also let us know what you scratch it with (i.e. shovel, knife, etc.)

If you know the coordinates (latitude, longitude) look at the area on Google Earth or similar program. Looking at things from high above might reveal info about the area not visible from the ground. Consider talking to some old people in the area as they might know what the site was used for (or heard stories passed down).

Regarding the "well", when you drop a pebble down the hole do you hear it hit the water? If so, drop another pebble down and and count the seconds before you hear it hit the water.
