Good tip, Dixie. Any idea how old it may be? I'll search for old overall buttons and see what I can find.

Thanks,

Ian

Neat find! It's a work clothes button, probably around 70-90 years old. A number of early 1900's work clothes buttons with similar locomotive designs are listed in Baker's Railroad Collectibles and in Hughes & Lester's The Big Book of Buttons.

This is one of my coolest finds lately. I have no idea what it is, but I think it's old. It looks like it has an old Locomotive on it and it may be a flat button? Can anyone help me out with ID on this? Found at 2" deep in wooded cellar hole that dates to 1830-1850.

Ian

The button you found more than likely was owned by a Union soldier. I found the exact same button lying on top of the ground in my backyard on what is part of my family's old plantation/farm. After the battle of Bentonville, in North Carolina, the Union army split up to search for parts of Johnston's army. A group of Union soldiers were said to have made an encampment in what is now my back yard before continuing their march towards Raleigh/Durham. This website has a bit of history as well as the button I sent to them to upload. They found the same button at a battle site in Florida between Florida militiamen and a Union detachment:Home Page

My button that is shown on that website was found near Archer Lodge, NC. Just for reference. Small world, huh?

It's a small world when everything is civil war related but a BIG world when these turn up everywhere! Lol.

I have found dozens of these buttons and attribute them to "Locomotive Brand Overalls."

They aren't even from the civil war era. Sorry!

Cheers,
Dave.

Dave,

This website has relics recovered from a battleground in Florida. There was one found in the same area. I searched Locomotive Brand Overalls but found no such a button. Here is the site: Home Page

Thanks,
Brandon
