Nice backing plate for a door handle-not sure how the bolt/slide worked though.
Wonder if there was a thumb latch release on the inside?
 

Pretty sure that is for a door with a push bar. Like they used to have in schools.

I'm picturing something like the item in the lower left. Only old. And slightly different. LOL But you get the idea.
 

Hmmm, so there was two? One on each side of the door. I guess the lock went on the inside of the door through round latch hole
I cancel what I thought I hadn't enlarged the photo, I thought the rectangular spot was a hole through the piece.
