Locate WWII Dog tag owner!

A few years ago I found a WWII USMC dog tag.? The location was Balboa Park in San Diego, Ca.
The park was originally built for the 1915 expo celebrating the opening of the Panama Canal. During the War, the park was used for many different military functions. I have found numerous quality finds in this park.? I am interested in finding the owner (or surviving family members) of the Marine who the Dog Tag was issued to.? The tag clearly has the name and what I believe was referred to at the time as a "serial" or "service" number.? ?I am a Desert Storm Vet and my Dog Tag has my Social Security number on it.? Can anyone suggest how I would locate a WWII Veteran. I would really be proud to get it back to the family.

That dog tag is not necessarily a WWII tag. When I was in the service in the 60's my service number wasn't the same as my social security number, no ones's was. I'm not sure when they went to that system of assigning serial numbers. Also I found out that in the early seventies before everything was computerized they had a big fire and a lot of old service records were destroyed. If that person's records were burned you may have to go to the VA to find anything. If they ever filed a VA claim or bought a house or went to school through the GI bill they would have a record with the VA.

Uncle Sam in his infinite wisdom tried to make things simple . Your SS number will indicate where you first got it . Your draft number does the same . If you joined it will have that code at the beginning . By having the number it is easy to identify where the fella lived when he registered/joined . Put the number out and maybe myself or someone else can help . This will narrow it down for your search . The first 2 digits of a person that joined will tell where they entered the service . I joined in NYC so my first 2 numbers are 12 . The Draft number begins with the office where they registered . Since I was in NYC I seem to remember that my first 2 digits were 58 . If your tag has 3 digits followed by 2 digits followed by 4 digits it would probably be a SS number and therefore not WW2 vintage .
