A Bend man who allegedly left a backpack full of syringes and balloons used to transport heroin at a downtown bank in December called to get it back a few days later, police said. Instead, he was arrested this week, after drug agents raided his home and seized about $3,400 worth of heroin during an undercover operation.
Staff at Washington Mutual Bank at 450 NW Franklin Ave. told police they had found the backpack, and a Bend police officer seized it, contacting the Central Oregon Drug Enforcement Team to investigate, CODE Team Lt. John Gautney said Tuesday.
The backpack contained numerous syringes, as well as balloons commonly used to transport heroin, some with residue inside, he said.
A pay stub also found in the backpack tied it to Brian Chapman Bushnell, 25, Gautney said, triggering an investigation into Bushnell's alleged heroin sales and distribution in the area.
Over the past two months, CODE Team detectives arranged for undercover purchases of heroin on several occasions from Bushnell, Gautney said.
Earlier this month, a search warrant was executed at Bushnell's home at 63833 Hunters Circle and he was later arrested on heroin delivery charges, the lieutenant said.
Since the investigation began, detectives have seized more than 13 grams of heroin worth about $3,400, Gautney said. At the home, they also seized packaging material, scales and a small amount of cash.
Bushnell was arrested Monday and booked into the Deschutes County Jail on $5,000 bail. He was released late Tuesday afternoon after posting the required 10 percent amount, a jail officer said.
More arrests are expected as the investigation continues, Gautney said.
It's the second heroin bust and fourth arrest involving the drug in Bend this month.
On Feb. 5, a Bend couple and their roommate were arrested in a raid on their northeast Bend apartment that turned up heroin and cash. Three children, ages 3 years to 9 months old, were taken into protective custody.
