ear tags werent used until later, and most of em are plastic. I suspect it is a tag off a seed bag.

Thanks for the replies. Your ideas give me other investigative possibilities.

It is lead. Tried searching for "Rich Clayton Leeds" and cannot find anything on that person or company. I see Richard Clayton and in Leeds, England but nothing that shows this. I will search for seed bag tags and cloth seals to see what gets close.

think you are right Bigcypresshunter. Dating is challenging cause I cannot find Rich Clayton, Richard Clayton or Richard Clayton Leeds

Im not sure if all bags but most bag seals had a wire, I think.

Cloth or bale seal from the Rich or Right Company out of Leeds (New York) or Clayton (New York?) Happy Hunting and it is a very cool find! Sub 8-)

I find matches for a cloth merchant named Richard Clayton in Leeds at the beginning of the 1800's. He was on Blackman Lane. Aside from that I didn't find anything of interest about him.
