livery buttons any one good at IDing them?

cheers mate the silver one is already on there they think it might be from a earl or something as its got a crown.. but nobody seems to know :dontknow:

Here is another one I've been watching grow. :thumbsup: Not quite finshed but there button pics. are killer and makes it nice to look at.Also has some good info. it seems.There is five pages of some very nice buttons form different circa.The ural will take you right to the Livery Buttons.

That's right, the likelihood of tracking down an actual family name is slim to none. These were very often generic designs which people picked to represent their family. Sometimes it was linked to their family heraldic past, but by the 1830-60s when these were being used the families were so intermarried that their crests would be far more complicated. So they may have just picked an element of their crest, say a Deer for example. These were servants buttons worn by the coachmen, game keeper & various other staff that worked on the estate/big house. However, I'm sure they got into the mainstream self-made merchant, for example or industrialist market as well as others who wanted to show breeding (which they never had).

The most detail you can get is from the backmark of the button, you need to include every 'star' & comma for a date range. Many of them were Firmin & Son.
