Well I have filed in the U.B.O. box don't think it is part of the latch system, leaning to part of a barette . Rarely do I find things that don't require investigations most unresolved. Doesn't sit well in my must resolve brain.Being head of the “slang police” I must interject. I would put this piece in the “ whutchamacallit” family of unknown items, and just so you know, there are NO documented recoveries of the elusive “ 3 inch thing-a-ma-bob”, 2 and 5 inch ones have been recovered, but no 3 inch.

Maybe it was decorative part of a tin metal toy truck or car that rusted away??
The old ride on and pedal car Fire Trucks had a lot of shiny brass attachments on them...
