I would wager it is part of a British military buckle or clasp of sorts. Hard to nail down a date as the lions head was used for so long by the British military...likely early 1800's...maybe even into the 1700's

it has gilt on both side which lends to me thinking its not
a dresser pull(y put gold on the back side of something thats not going to seen)
its not chunk cast metal its thin but not easy to bend ::)
the area it was found in has a few (2 maybe 3) different human activity
one was school house's and settlement close by
second a Indians village
third a encampment during the black hawk wars (this one is a little iffy to place )
as to what area it was
the Indians in the same area, some of the older members were warriors(later chiefs in the BH conflict) in the war of 1812 down in these parts :-\ so.................... ::)
