Lion/swan thingie

Found this in the woods in an area dating back to the early 1800's amoungst some old foundations....was down about 8 inches and appears to be cast...any ideas?? Thanks.

How about a knob type pull for a hutch or (lets see if I get this right) armoire? (nope)
It definitely could be something along those lines...

Gypsy...I think you are right about it being a snake...it looks just like this snake ( at first I thought it was a swan as well) on this buckle I fould a while back...and it could be a buckle as well....

I think it may be a Chimera--and I don't know about it being from a buckle due to the back of it... That smooth back was attached to something else.  I've seen these types of attachments on harness bosses and other similar items--and in fact it could be an old harness boss.  (These come in many shapes...) 

So I'm going with

"Brass Chimera decoration for a horse bridle or other leather item."


That's a cool find.

Buckleboy..thanks for that and you could be right on for the foundations I found it at are right near some old cart roads and they were traveled heavily by horse years ago. And know I am gonna have to look up to see what the heck a chimera and harness bosses are... I;m a fisherman and farm lingo and terms baffle me...

No problem. Harness bosses are brass or silver plated brass decorations for the ends of leather straps on horse bridles, etc.

A chimera is a mythical beast. Here's a good wikipedia article on it:
