Maine - Possibly a decorative piece for a door or furniture? Was going to say door-knocker 'til I saw the back...

Cool piece regardless...

DD...a furniture piece is what first came to my mind as well...something like a drawer pull or something like that?? ???

How about a knob type pull for a hutch or (lets see if I get this right) armoire? (nope) :D
It definitely could be something along those lines...

Gypsy...I think you are right about it being a snake...it looks just like this snake ( at first I thought it was a swan as well) on this buckle I fould a while back...and it could be a buckle as well.... ???

Neat item!

I think it may be a Chimera--and I don't know about it being from a buckle due to the back of it... That smooth back was attached to something else.  I've seen these types of attachments on harness bosses and other similar items--and in fact it could be an old harness boss.  (These come in many shapes...)

So I'm going with

"Brass Chimera decoration for a horse bridle or other leather item."

That's a cool find.  :)

Buckleboy..thanks for that and you could be right on for the foundations I found it at are right near some old cart roads and they were traveled heavily by horse years ago. And know I am gonna have to look up to see what the heck a chimera and harness bosses are... :icon_scratch: :D I;m a fisherman and farm lingo and terms baffle me... :D

No problem. Harness bosses are brass or silver plated brass decorations for the ends of leather straps on horse bridles, etc.

A chimera is a mythical beast. Here's a good wikipedia article on it:

(click on the first link on the page "Chimera(mythology)" ) The photo of the Etruscan bronze statue of a Chimera at the bottom of the page will give you an idea:

That's one of the things I love about this forum.

:)

I don't think this is a solid ID for the item--but it is a start.  Perhaps the info will help.
