Does anyone know what kind of coin this is? It looks very similar to the coins on the wallpaper to this site.
Front(?) side has two palm trees with L, "8", M on top. P, V, A in middle. 7, I, I on bottom. Along the edge is DIARVM.
Back side has cross with lions and castles with PHILIPPVS along the edge.
About the size of half dollar. It seems there is a stamped ridge (seam) like two sides were pressed together to form coin.
I'm told it is a Lima 8 Escudo. Is there any way to find out if it is real or fake? It doesn't look like pure gold to me, but it could be as pure as they used. How 'pure' would it be, anyway?
Even if it's a genuine conterfeit (meaning conterfeited in the 1700s), what kind of value would it have?
