I found this today while searching a field. My first thought is that it is some sort of medallion for a light fixture. As you can see its approx. 5" across. The middle has a hole in it. The edge around this hole is bent. It is very ornate. The place I'm searching is an early 1900's homestead.
Also in one of the pictures there is a spot at about 1:00 in the picture where a set screw would have went.

Any ideas on age and most importantly "What is it"

Thanks for looking.

Could be an old wall sconce backing for a gas light, or it could be modern, hard to say. When I was still in construction I installed a lot of similar ones. The center hole is wide enough for gas, and wider than I would expect for electric.

All wall and ceiling light fixtures are usually mounted to a junction box by 2 mounting screws usually 3, 4 or 5 inches apart. I don't see that. Also the hole is way too small for connecting or splicing wires thru it. It looks like a base for something the hole could have held a stand that was connected by some kind of mounting nuts that someone ripped out causing that jagged hole. I've been an electrician for over 20 years and have never seen anything like that used. I'm not saying that it couldn't be a PART of a fancy lamp or light fixture, if it is it would have to be something that hung from something larger. And not a main piece directly mounted to a wall or ceiling box.

The edge of the thing has similarities to a paint can lid. It has a rim all around it like it went inside something else. Maybe like you were saying, it could have been part of a lamp base.

What about a decorative cover against the wall where the flue pipe from
a stove or wood burner went thru to the ouside?
