Re: light bulb!!!!

From the best I can tell, if its marked Edison only, it should be from circa 1880-1905. Check out http://home.frognet.net/~ejcov/ch11.html for some things to identify it by. Isn't it amazing how they use to make bulbs last forever.

Nice old bulb!

Re: light bulb!!!!

Just some trivia about these type bulbs. There is one in a firehouse in Boston, New York, or someplace out east that has been burning 24/7 since they put it in.

Now that's a long-lasting bulb.

Re: light bulb!!!!

back when this bulb was still in use, after they burned out, people would hold
them under water and break off the nipple with a pair of pliers. because of the
vacuum inside the bulb, it would suck in water. they would then take the half water
filled bulb and hang it on the back porch (nipple end pointed down) for a
home made barometer. when a high pressure would move into the region,
the bulb would start start to drip and you would know when it was going to rain.

Re: light bulb!!!!

Thomas Edison had a winter home in Fort Myers Florida now a museum and is full of his early bamboo filament bulbs that still burn everyday.
Yours appears to be the 1892 version.

Very good trivia....I've heard that also. Not to nit-pick, but it is low pressure that causes the air to expand in the bulb.....low pressure usally means rain. Thanks for sharing!
