without pics I can almost guarantee that you are looking at a snap fastener. The old school army field equipment I remember always had those brass button closers. The have a tiny bulge in them so that it shouldn't open unless you pull in the proper direction, aka "lift the dot"

Yep. WWI through 1950's and in civilian use as well.

Still in use on boat canvas.

I remember them from the old canteen covers. The newer ones then went to snaps. Have no idea what they use now.

Old 1911 mag pouch has those on them

Also used on older convertables to snap the tonaue cover or soft top onto the body of the car.

It’s a dot lifter, for those pesky dots that are just too heavy.......................lol
